From earlier kalabaw, with dropping of /l/ when surrounded by identical vowels in Boholano and Leyte dialects, borrowed from Waray-Waray karabaw, ultimately from Austroasiatic via Malay kerbau. Compare Bikol Central karabaw, Hiligaynon karabaw, Tagalog kalabaw, Tausug kabaw and Waray-Waray karabaw.
