From Middle High German klieben, from Old High German klioban, from Proto-West Germanic *kleuban, from Proto-Germanic *kleubaną. Cognate with German klieben, English cleave.

    Gazaaghet 's hòltz, misses khèmman gakhlóopet.
    Once the wood is sawn, it has to be split.
