At first in soldiers’ slang among the Armée d’Afrique. From common Maghrebi Arabic, including Algerian Arabic كيف كيف(kīf kīf, the same; in the same way), from كيف(kīf, how; like), itself from Arabic كَيْفَ(kayfa).
