Usage notes

• Kimsə is used when the referent is not known to the speaker. When the referent is known, but the speaker does not wish to specify them, bir nəfər is used instead. Compare the following sentences:

• Dünən kimsə gəlmişdi. ― Yesterday someone (not known to the speaker) came by.
• Dünən bir nəfər gəlmişdi. ― Yesterday someone (known to the speaker) came by.
• Sabah onlar kimləsə danışacaqlar. ― Tomorrow they will talk to someone (not known to them).
• Sabah onlar bir nəfərlə danışacaqlar. ― Tomorrow they will talk to someone (known to them).
