editFrom Proto-Finnic *kupla, probably from Proto-Finno-Ugric *kupla. Related to Estonian kubel, Southern Sami gåbloe (“lung”), Karelian kupla, Livvi kubl and probably Inari Sami koble (“roe pouch”), Eastern Mari кувыл (kuvyl, “bubbles on the water surface, due to rain”) and Southern Mansi [script needed] (kɛ̮wl-, “to swim, to float”), possibly also Hungarian hólyag (“bladder”).
