editCoined by Jan Svatopluk Presl[1] as kyselý (“acidic, sour”) + -ík, based on Latin oxygenium from Ancient Greek ὀξύς (oxús, “sharp”) + γένος (génos, “birth”) (referring to oxygen's role in the formation of acids).
