From la̠³⁵ + ma³⁵, with nasal assimilation at the first element and tone sandhi at the second. Ultimately from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s/ɡ-la. Cognate with Burmese (la.), Nuosu (hlep, moon (literary), month), Old Chinese (OC *ljaːɡ), Tibetan ཟླ་བ (zla ba). Compare Zaiwa lvomo.
