Named after Lapu-Lapu, the 16th century datu of Mactan. And also from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kuʀapu (the sea perch, giant rock cod, giant grouper, Epinephelus spp.). Compare Malay kerapu, Indonesian kerapu, Tausug kulapu, Pangutaran Sama kulapu Cebuano pugapo, Bikol Central pugapo.
