Etymology edit
From Old Danish leffnæ, Old Norse lifna (“to remain”), from Proto-Germanic *lifnōną, cognate with Swedish lämna (“to leave”), Gothic 𐌰𐍆𐌻𐌹𐍆𐌽𐌰𐌽 (aflifnan, “to remain”). The verb is an inchoative of *lībaną (“to stay”) (cf. also *libjaną (“to live”)).
