editFrom Frankish *lausinga (“lie”),[1] which is said not to be related to Latin laus (“praise”) (compare Spanish lisonja (“flattery”)),[2] but is rather probably from Proto-Germanic *lausaz (“false”).[3] See also Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐌿𐍃 (laus).
