From Javanese ꦭꦺꦴꦮꦺꦴꦁ (lowong, vacant), from Old Javanese luwaṅ (pit, hole, cavity), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *luaŋ (hole), from Proto-Austronesian *luaŋ (hole). Doublet of luang and lubang. Compare to Malay lohong.
