From Old Galician-Portuguese marfil, almafi, almafil, from Arabic عَظْم اَلْفِيل (ʕaẓm al-fīl, “elephant-bone”), from عَظْم (ʕaẓm, “bone”) + فِيل (fīl, “elephant”). Compare Galician, Spanish, and Catalan marfil.
