From Proto-Indo-European *h₃m(e)iǵʰyeh₂-, a derivative of *meiǵʰ-, *h₃meiǵʰ-. Compare Old Armenian մէզ(mēz), Latin meiō, Avestan [script needed](maēsati), Sanskrit मेहति(mehati), Lithuanian myžti, Ancient Greek ὀμείχω(omeíkhō).
