From Proto-Indo-European *h₃m(e)iǵʰyeh₂-, a derivative of *meiǵʰ-, *h₃meiǵʰ-. Compare Old Armenian մէզ ‎(mēz), Latin meiō, Avestan [script needed] ‎(maēsati), Sanskrit मेहति ‎(mehati), Lithuanian myžti, Ancient Greek ὀμείχω ‎(omeíkhō).
