Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ملی (millî, “pertaining to a religion, sect, community, or nation; religious, national”), from Arabic مِلِّيّ (milliyy, “of or relating to a religious community”). By surface analysis, millet (“nation”) + -i (nisba suffix).
