From mirk +‎ -en, or perhaps from Middle English *mirknen, *merknen, from Old Norse myrkna ‎(to darken), cognate with Icelandic myrkna ‎(to darken), Swedish mörkna ‎(to get dark, darken), Danish mørkne ‎(to darken). More at murk.
