From moɗ- + -u + -gol. Ultimately from Proto-Fula-Serer *mʊd/ɗ (to swallow), whence also Serer mud (“to drink a liquid from a large vessel”). Likely also related to Proto-Fula-Serer *muɗ (to eat something starchy)[1]
