From Old French musel, diminutive of muse, from Late Latin mūsus (muzzle), of uncertain etymology but probably expressive of the shape of protruded lips and/or influenced by Latin mūgīre (to moo, bellow).

Cognate to Italian muso, Old Spanish mus, Lombard mus and muson. Not related to French morceau nor to Spanish morro (hill; muzzle), Provençal mourre (muzzle), Occitan morre (hill; muzzle).
