1. nourishment, food; that which nurtures or nourishes an organism; the lunch on your table

2. a livelihood, a trade, work, a profession, business, industry; that which brings lunch on your table

Usage notes

• Näringsliv (business life, predominantly privately owned) is the opposite of public institutions (schools, government agencies) in many political discussions.
• The various trades can either be called näring (åkerinäring, fiskerinäring) or bransch (bilbransch, stålbransch).
