Inherited from Old Polish nogietek, nogtek, from nogieć + -ek, from Proto-Slavic *nȍgъtь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *nagutis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃nógʰ-u-s ~ *h₃n̥gʰ-éw-s. Influenced through folk etymology by association with nagi (“naked, nude”) or nagięty (“bent”).
