From gur (stone).[1] Alternatively a variant of hungëroj, from Proto-Indo-European *ger- (to scream). Compare Lithuanian gùrti (shrill, shriek, scream), Sanskrit जरते (járatē, it rushes, sounds, crackles, shouts).
