From gur ‎(stone). Alternatively a variant of hungëroj, from Proto-Indo-European *ger- 'to scream'. Compare Lithuanian gùrti ‎(shrill, shriek, scream), Sanskrit जरते ‎(járatē, it rushes, sounds, crackles, shouts).
