oppiarvo
Finnish
editEtymology
editoppi (“study”) + arvo (“rank, title”). Coined by Finnish journalist and lecturer Rietrik Polén in 1858.
Pronunciation
editNoun
editoppiarvo
- degree (an award bestowed by a university or a college as an indication of academic achievement)
Usage notes
edit- An honorary degree is referred to as arvo.
- In everyday usage, tutkinto is normally used instead of oppiarvo. For practical purposes the difference is insignificant, since obtaining an oppiarvo is the direct result of accomplishing everything that is required for a tutkinto.
