From pëni (to fall) +‎ pahk (leaf) +‎ ihële (flow, move, go). Cognates with first element include Montagnais pinassiu (the leaves fall from the trees), Ojibwe bangisin (it falls), Munsee punaapehleew (it falls), Malecite-Passamaquoddy poneqiw (down, downwards).
