From Byzantine Greek παπαγᾶς (papagâs), from Arabic بَبَغَاء (babaḡāʔ), of onomatopoeic origin. Influenced by gallo (“rooster”). Cognate with German Papagei, Spanish papagayo, and English popinjay.
