From Urdu پرگنة (Hindi परगना (paragnā)), from Persian پرگنة.

pargana (plural parganas)

1. (India) An administrative unit of India, consisting of a number of villages. [from 17th c.] Since Indian independence, replaced by the block or tahsil.
