From Proto-Eastern Algonquian *paxkəši·kan, from Proto-Algonquian *paθk-eš-i·kan-i.[1] Equivalent to páxkshum (“to cut through”) +‎ -íikan (instrumental suffix). Cognate with Unami paxkshikàn (“knife”), Mahican xíikan (“knife”).
