periodic acid
English edit
Etymology edit
per- + iodic acid
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
periodic acid (plural periodic acids)
- (inorganic chemistry) HIO4 or H5IO6, the oxyacids of iodine in which iodine has the highest oxidation number; H5IO6 is a white crystalline substance (HIO4 is not stable), and both are strong oxidizing agents.
Usage notes edit
- Note that the pronunciation of the first word of this term is different from that of "periodic" in the sense of "recurring in periods", because the word "periodic" here is derived from per- + iodic.
Hyponyms edit
- metaperiodic acid (HIO4)
- orthoperiodic acid (H5IO6)
