  1. (uncountable) Alternative form of pétanque (French boules game)
  2. (mining, dated, countable, uncountable) Any of various ores, including forms of silver sulfide (such as stephanite) and the copper ore tetrahedrite.
    • 1883, Charles Bunker Dahlgren, Historic Mines of Mexico:
      First-discovered mine in the District; gave much "petanque" (stephanite, or silver glance).
    • 1902, Reports Mining Engineers, Cieneguita Copper Company, page 26:
      There are other openings on the ledge between the ends of these claims, but all are small and filled with debris, but it is an interesting and notable fact that all the workings show the rich sulphide of silver, or petanque ore []
