From German Plüsch, English plush, Yiddish פּליוש (plyush), Polish plusz, Russian плюш (pljuš), all from French peluche, ultimately from Vulgar Latin *pilūc(i)cāre, a derivative from Latin pilāre (“depilate, remove hair”). Compare Dutch pluche, Portuguese pelúcia, Hungarian plüss.
