editFrom pták (“bird”) + -o- + pysk (“lip”). Calque of translingual Ornithorhynchus,[1] from Ancient Greek ὄρνιθ- (órnith-) (the stem of ὄρνις (órnis, “bird”)) + ῥύγχος (rhúnkhos, “snout”); Coined by Jan Svatopluk Presl (1791–1849).
