puheenjohtaja
Finnish edit
Etymology edit
puheen (“of talk”) + johtaja (“leader”), from johtaa puhetta (“to chair”). Coined by Finnish professor, poet and scholar August Ahlqvist in 1865.
Pronunciation edit
- IPA(key): /ˈpuheːnˌjohtɑjɑ/, [ˈpuɦe̞ːnˌjo̞xt̪ɑ̝jɑ̝]
- Rhymes: -ohtɑjɑ
- Syllabification(key): pu‧heen‧joh‧ta‧ja
Noun edit
puheenjohtaja
- chairman, chairwoman, chairperson
- Jos puheenjohtaja on estynyt osallistumasta kokoukseen, puhetta johtaa varapuheenjohtaja.
- If the chairperson is unable to attend the meeting, the meeting is chaired by the vice chairperson.
Usage notes edit
The term puheenjohtaja does not specify the gender and is the correct translation of all the three English terms mentioned above. The originally gender-specific term puhemies is used in practice only of the chairmen of national parliaments, and is used to refer to both men and women in that position. A term equivalent to "chairwoman" does not exist in Finnish.
