Related to Proto-Semitic *ḳudš- (holy). Cognate with Biblical Hebrew קָדוֹשׁ (qɔḏoš, holy), Hebrew קודש / קֹדֶשׁ (qṓḏeš), Old South Arabian 𐩤𐩵𐩪 (qds¹) and Arabic قُدْس (quds, purity, holiness).
