Related to Proto-Semitic *ḳudš- (“holy”). Cognate with Biblical Hebrew קָדוֹשׁ (qɔḏoš, “holy”), Hebrew קודש / קֹדֶשׁ (qṓḏeš), Old South Arabian 𐩤𐩵𐩪 (qds¹) and Arabic قُدْس (quds, “purity, holiness”).
