From Proto-Semitic *ḳudš- (holy). Cognate with Biblical Hebrew קָדוֹשׁ (qɔḏoš, holy), Hebrew קודש / קֹדֶשׁ (qṓḏeš) and Old South Arabian 𐩤𐩵𐩪 (qds¹).
