From Old Galician-Old Portuguese, from Vulgar Latin *quaresima, from Latin quadrāgēsima (the fortieth part; Lent), substantive of quadrāgēsimus (fortieth). Cognate of quadragésima (fortieth). Compare Spanish Cuaresma. Doublet of quadragésima, which was a borrowing.
