Etymology edit
Inherited from Old French kiqunques, composed of qui (“who”) + qu(i) + onques (“ever”). The adverbial /-s/ may have later been removed by influence of Latin quicumque, which has the same meaning. Compare Italian chiunque, a similar formation.
