The feminized version of the masculine ragazzo (boy; boyfriend) from Medieval Latin *ragatius, most probably ultimately from Arabic رَقَّاص(raqqāṣ, messenger, courier), or alternatively from Ancient Greek ῥάκος (rhákos, rag, tatter, suggesting the clothing).
