rail brake (plural rail brakes)

  1. (rail transport) A type of brake, often magnetic or electromagnetic, which is pressed against the rail in railway track.

      The locomotive is fitted with disc air brakes, and in addition magnetic rail brakes are fitted to each bogie for emergency.
