From Old Irish recht (compare Irish reacht), from Proto-Celtic *rextus, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ-tus. Cognate with Welsh rhaith (“a right, entitlement”) and Breton reizh (“law, right”), and indirectly German Recht (“law”) (from Proto-Germanic *rehtą (“a right, privilege”)).
