From Middle High German rechen, from Old High German rehhan, from Proto-Germanic *rekaną. Cognate with German rechen, Gothic 𐍂𐌹𐌺𐌰𐌽 (rikan), also Latin regō, Old Irish at·reig, Ancient Greek ὀρέγω (orégō).
