Etymology edit

Alteration of relâmpado, from re- +‎ lâmpado, from Latin lampada (lamp), from lampas, or through a derivative of Late Latin lampāre. The prefix re- indicates the idea of repetition, hence lightning striking over and over again. Compare Spanish relámpago.
