Albanian edit

Etymology edit

Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *h₂énh₂ts ~ *h₂n̥h₂tés (duck), through an ih₂-stem variant *h₂néh₂t-ih₂ ~ *h₂n̥h₂t-yéh₂ (eventually *anātyā), an innovation similar to those found in Ancient Greek νῆττα (nêtta) and Sanskrit आति (ātí). The change from n-r can be attributed to rhotacism. Cognates in closely akin Paleo-Balkan languages were lent into Romanian rață (duck) and Slovene ráca (duck).
