Definite origin uncertain. Possibly a substratum word, akin to Albanian (*ratsa) rosë, or from South Slavic (compare Serbo-Croatian/Slovene raca, Serbian dialect race, Bulgarian rĕca (rĕca)); compare also Friulian raze, Occitan rit, Hungarian réce, Romani ratsoy.
