en säckstation

Etymology

edit

Compound of säck (sack; bag) +‎ station (station). First attested in 1899[1]. Cognate with German Sackbahnhof and Norwegian sekkestasjon.

Noun

edit

säckstation c

  1. A terminus, a terminal; a type of train station without any thoroughfare, where the railroad tracks stop (although not necessarily the final stop of the line).

Usage notes

edit
  • Only used in a concrete sense about the station structure itself. The end of a line is called slutstation or ändstation.
  • Depending on strictness; a station with thoroughfare can still be considered a säckstation if the continuing tracks only let the train turn around, or are under construction or maintenance, or if only freight trains pass through.
