From a derivative of Proto-West Germanic *sail, from Proto-Germanic *sailaz (silent), from Proto-Indo-European *seyl- (to be silent) + -nes (-ness). Related to Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌰𐍃𐌹𐌻𐌰𐌽 (anasilan, to cease, become silent), Latin sileō (be silent), Old English seoloþ (sea, lake).
