From Proto-Germanic *skaggô, *skaggijô, *skaggiją (bristle, beard, hair), from Proto-Germanic *skag- (to emerge, stick out, project) +‎ -ga (diminutive suffix). Cognate with Old Norse skegg (beard), Old Norse skeggi (bearded one, bearded man), Old Norse skaga (to jut out, project).
