From Vulgar Latin *suggluttiāre, from suggluttium or from alteration of Latin singultāre, from singultus, with the prefix sub- and with influence from gluttīre. Compare Sicilian sugghiuzzari, Italian singhiozzare, Spanish sollozar, Romanian sughița.
