From Proto-Indo-European *semH- (to scoop, draw).[1] Cognate with Latin sentīna (bilgewater, bilge (of a ship)), Proto-Celtic *semeti (to pour), and possibly Ancient Greek ᾰ̓́μη (ámē, shovel; pail).
