Etymology

From Old Albanian shtanse, from *shtan + -zë, from Proto-Albanian *stana, from Proto-Indo-European *sth₂-nó-s (standing), participle of *steh₂- (to stand). Ultimately a doublet of stër-. Alternatively, from Dacian or paleo-balkan substrate, cognate to Romanian stână.[1]
