From Old Norse skemta (to amuse, entertain), from Proto-Germanic *skammatjaną (to make short, briefen), equivalent to skammur +‎ -ta. Cognate with Icelandic skemmta, Norwegian Nynorsk skjemta, Swedish skämta, and Danish skæmte.
