Borrowed from Middle Low German spek, form Proto-Germanic *spiką, cognate with German Speck (“bacon”), English speck (“fat”), Old Norse spik. The geminate consonant of Danish spæk(k-), Norwegian spekk and Swedish späck points to a Low German origin (the Old Norse form would have resulted in Danish *speg).
