Etymology

edit

From a Vulgar Latin root *supercenna, from *supergenna, formed from a confusion of Latin supercilia and gena (whence came Romanian geană), or from supercilia with influence from geană in early Romanian or Proto-Romanian, analogous to the original Latin deriving from super (above) + cilia (eyelash). Compare Spanish sobreceño. The Romanian word (as well as the Aromanian equivalent sprindzeanã) developed a nasal infix, similarly to Portuguese sobrancelha, Romansh survantscheglia. Cf. also sufruncea.[1]
